Asta is the wonderful little dog in the superb “The Thin Man” series of films starring William Powell and Myrna Loy (as Nick and Nora Charles). In the original story by Dashiell Hammett, Asta was a female Schnauzer, but on screen Asta was played by a wire-haired fox terrier called “Skippy”. In a few hours, I’ll be heading to the airport and hopping on a flight to Los Angeles. I’m a visiting a friend for the weekend, and then flying back to San Francisco on Sunday night. Anyway, the point is… My Crossword Trainer and Letter Trainer were able to harness this feedback loop and become much more effective training tools than I originally suspected. This is because your brain tries to predict the future, which affects the way you see the world.

Cryptic crossword research

I’m thinking of modifying the program, so I can actually enter my guess (rather than just thinking of it). This way, the program can record which answers I get right and wrong, allowing me to prioritize the types of words I’m having trouble with and to quantitatively measure my progress session-over-session. To do this, I’ll need to start solving some easier puzzles.

A nice piece of cake is waiting for you in this corner of the playground. This one was over lickety-split, and charmed me as bears always do. Reni Santoni was a prolific character actor on TV and in films from the 1960's through the 2010's. Apparently had a brief recurring role on Seinfeld. Anyway RENI caused no problems because the crosses were easy. Olivia Colman has been a favorite actress of mine for many years, drawing my attention for the many comedic roles that she has had on mainly British TV and radio.

What is Wordle?

I still need to determine the optimal way to structure my Letter Trainer practice sessions, but at least I have a directional plan. Based on the initial answers I lay down in the “Beginning” stage, I should be able to build momentum and fill in a decent portion of the puzzle. At some point though, I seemingly won’t be able to make any further progress. I’ve considered a few other variations of this program (multiple question marks per answer, two answers intersecting at a question mark, etc.), but this most simplified version seems to be sufficient for now. This Expanding & Contracting approach seems to be the best way to overcome a loss in momentum. In fact, in many cases, all I’ve needed was one more letter to unlock sizable areas of the puzzle.

I’m not exactly sure how I’ll do this, given that the NYT Saturday is supposed to be the “hardest puzzle around”, but it’s something to look into. I still wanted to practice in some way though, so I figured that a Monday puzzle (the easiest puzzle of the week) might be a good way to relax while also keeping my momentum moving forward. Of course, I knew this, but I didn’t realize quite how intense the difference would be between 100% brain and whatever my brain was at today. It seems a tired brain is just not-well-suited for wordplay, puns, and aggressive misdirection. In 76% of the cases, I filled in the correct letter on my first attempt. For the other squares, I probably averaged around 2.3 guesses per square.

The puzzles in Daily Themed Crossword are organized around a different theme each day, with clues and answers related to that theme. For example, the theme for a particular day might be movies, and all the clues and answers would be related to movies in some way. Daily Themed Crossword is a popular online crossword puzzle game that is updated daily with new puzzles for players to solve. The game is developed by PlaySimple Games and is available on both iOS and Android devices. I thought the theme was very clever for a Monday ... Finding four phrases with names of bears AND the letters ME?

• In fact, I am typing this blog post right now in Google Docs.

Therefore, it’s important that I specifically focus my training on overcoming these points of low momentum, and maintaining the necessary mindset. I will need to train my brain’s crossword abilities in a very analogous way. I’ve largely figured out how to train for this part of my approach, as I’ve described in my past posts about the programatic Crossword Trainer. Today, with this renewed motivation, I was able to spend 90 fully-focused minutes with the Crossword Trainer.

Instead, I’m going to need to make some sort of training app/program that I can use to receive more immediate feedback and that I can control for more intelligent training.

I get the Sunday magazine in paper, but it's such a pain to fill out by hand I always do it on line. That said, there's something wonky about the program. I can never get it to fill in the first letter of the first word of the puzzle until I've backspaced into it, and it often tells me I've completed the puzzle when I actually still have one space unfilled. It needs to be common answers with one letter differences impossible to determine without one cross.
